'The View' Star Meghan McCain LOST It After Whoopi Goldberg Returned to Give a Health Update

Joy Behar, Abby Huntsman, and Sunny Hostin were ecstatic as well.

  • Whoopi Goldberg surprised everyone on The View on Thursday's episode as she continues to recover from pneumonia.
  • Co-host Meghan McCain ran over to Whoopi screaming and was especially ecstatic to see her friend.
  • Whoopi explained how serious her struggle with double pneumonia and sepsis was.
  • Whoopi will be appearing here and there on The View over the next week and a half to "ease back" into work.

After being away from The View for over a month, Whoopi Goldberg returned to the show and shocked everyone – especially co-host Meghan McCain.

Opening Thursday's show, Joy Behar (who has been filling in for Whoopi as the head moderator) announced that Whoopi, 63, was still recovering from pneumonia and teased that we might "see her next week." But seconds later, Whoopi began walking out on the set, which made the entire audience burst into screams. When Abby Huntsman, Ana Navarro-Cárdenas, Sunny Hostin, and Meghan turned around to see what people were freaking out about, they instantly jumped up from their chairs to go hug Whoopi.

Everyone was super stoked to see the Sister Act star, but Meghan's reaction was especially epic. When she saw Whoopi, she began screaming and shuffled over to her as quickly as possible, while yelling "Oh my god!" As Whoopi strolled over to take a seat, Meghan continued clapping and pretended to bow down to Whoopi. She then encouraged the crowd to keep chanting "Whoopi! Whoopi! Whoopi!"

When everyone settled down, Whoopi explained that she "wasn't there yet," and still had a cough that she needed to get rid of. She also declared that over the next week and a half, she was going to try to come to the show more often to get back into the swing of things.

Although pneumonia is no laughing matter, Whoopi still managed to squeeze in a joke while talking about her recovery. The EGOT winner revealed that some people were actually asking her how she got pregnant (because Joy had made a joke on the show once that Whoopi was actually out on maternity leave).

Whoopi's reaction to people asking her that? Basically ... this:

Whoopi was most definitely sick. She had been coughing since November, but didn't find out she had pneumonia until she was taken to the hospital and discovered she had a fever of 102 degrees. An X-ray revealed that she had one lung filled with "stuff" in it.

The scariest moment of it all, as Whoopi explained on the show, was when the doctor said to her, "you do realize how close to death you were."

"It was, there's death [she pointed ahead of her] and here's me," Whoopi said. "That's how it was."

She continued: "You think because you've healed quick before that something crazy can't happen, well it can. Double pneumonia and sepsis."

As Mayo Clinic states, double pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs in both lungs. Sepsis, on the other hand, happens when the body's response to fighting off infections goes awry. In sepsis, the chemicals your body releases into the bloodstream to fight off an infection trigger a response that can damage your organs and dangerously lower blood pressure — sometimes, fatally.

Looking forward, Whoopi wants her story to serve as "a cautionary tale for all of us."

"You must really take care of yourself, because there's little tiny stuff out there that will kill you, that you never think of."
