'The View' Fans Rally Behind Whoopi Goldberg After She Says "Came Close to Leaving the Earth"

So glad to hear Whoopi is on the mend.

Update, March 14, 2019: Whoopi Goldberg appeared on Thursday's episode of The View and gave everyone a health update on her recovery from pneumonia. She said that while she still has a cough that she needs to get rid of, she is going to be on the show here and there over the next week and a half to "ease back" into it.

Moving forward, Whoopi wants her story of battling double pneumonia and sepsis to serve as "a cautionary tale for all of us."

"You must really take care of yourself," Whoopi explained. "There's little tiny stuff out there that will kill you, that you never think of."

Original, March 8, 2019:

After a little over one month of being away from The View, co-host Whoopi Goldberg gave a health update on Friday's episode.

"I am here. I am up and moving around. Not as fast as I'd like to be, but I am okay. I'm not dead," the 63-year-old show moderator began in her video message. She then went on to explain the details of what she's been dealing with over the past few weeks.

"I had pneumonia and I was septic. Pneumonia in both lungs, which meant there was fluid, there was all kinds of stuff going on. And yes, I came very, very close to leaving the Earth. Good news, I didn't," Whoopi said.

She closed out her announcement by thanking her fans (and even those who are not so fond of her) for wishing her a speedy recovery. "Ladies, I cannot wait to see y'all."

Upon hearing the update, fans immediately began tweeting words of support for Whoopi. "OMG @WhoopiGoldberg! Prayers and blessings to you! Glad you are still with us!! Get better! #TheView," one fan tweeted.

Others were downright shocked and saddened that the EGOT winner was going through such a tough time. "Pneumonia AND sepsis? My god, Whoopi was going through it," a fan said. "Whoa! @WhoopiGoldberg just said on #TheView that she almost died from double pneumonia and septic!! Glad to hear you’re on the mend Whoopi!!" another remarked.

As Mayo Clinic states, double pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs in both lungs. The infection is especially dangerous to those 65 or older and in people with health problems or weakened immune systems.

Sepsis occurs when the body's response to fighting off infections goes wrong. In sepsis, the chemicals your body releases into the bloodstream to fight an infection trigger a response that can damage organ systems and dangerously lower blood pressure — at times, fatally.

Thankfully, it appears that Whoopi is overcoming both health adversities, and plans to come back to the show when she's fully ready. It could be a bit longer before we see her on The View again, but at least we know she's doing much better these days
