This $7 Shower Cap Is My Favorite Amazon Find

To be honest, I would've paid MORE for it.

I have long, thick hair that takes forever to style. The last thing I need is for it to get wet in the shower when I'm not washing it. It may sound trivial, but I have a hard enough time getting out the door in the morning! Plus, I know it's healthiest for my hair if I don't shampoo it every day.

The Good Stuff is a place where Good Housekeeping editors share the things they love, so you can shop smarter.

The solution seems simple enough: Just use a shower cap, right? Turns out, finding an affordable one that could actually keep water away from my hair was no easy task. I've tried what feels like every shower cap over the years — and finally turned to Amazon. I came across the Betty Dain Shower Cap, which is marked as Amazon's Choice and has more than 1,300 five-star reviews. Its description says it has an "oversized design" that is "perfect for all hair lengths and thicknesses." The best part is that it costs less than $7, so I figured it was worth a shot. Now, more than a year later, I can safely say it is one of my all-time favorite purchases.

Not only does the nylon cap cover all of my hair, it has a secure fit so water won't seep through. The elastic band did feel a bit tight on my forehead at first (and some reviewers mentioned this, too), but it stretched out after a few uses and quickly gave me a perfect fit. Now I just tie my hair into a bun, throw on the shower cap, and voilà — my hair is safely protected from the moisture.

The brand claims the PEVA lining is mold- and mildew-resistant. Some reviewers said they noticed a smell over time, but it's machine washable so it's easy to clean. Personally, I hang mine to dry over my bathroom's dehumidifier after each use and haven't noticed any odors.

Before I found this cap, I had tried all the trendy ones without any luck — they were either too small or easily developed mildew. Even the buzzy $43 style from Sephora was a disappointment (and it looks like many people agree with me based on the reviews). And don't even get me started on the cheap ones from the drugstore or the free ones at hotels; they barely even covered my bun.

Even if you don't have long or thick hair, this shower cap's snug fit and easy cleaning features make it totally worth it. I now spend less time touching up my hair in the morning and as a result I've also noticed less damage. It's a win-win in my book!
